People who use bikes can look forward to a treat from the Chancellor for the next tax year, which starts in a few days time. At a time of high fuel prices and a cost of living crisis, the new 20% discount on petrol and diesel for cycle riders will be most welcome, and should act as a further incentive for people to dump their SUVs in favour of cycles.
Announcing this positive news today, Rachel Reeves said, "Riding a bike embodies the essence of resilience and community spirit. Much like our collective efforts to build a fairer society, cycling promotes both personal well-being and environmental sustainability. Each pedal stroke is a testament to our commitment to cleaner air and healthier lifestyles. It’s a simple yet profound way to connect with our surroundings, reduce our carbon footprint, and foster a sense of unity on the roads, and this taxation change will encourage that". Ms Reeves speaks from personal experience, as she is often seen riding around her constituency of Leeds West and Pudsey on her vintage Raleigh Wendy.
