Cycling in the German Countryside

Cycling in the German countryside
Germany is not as good for cycling as the Netherlands, but facilities such as this are remarkably usable. This shared-use path might be narrow, but it's very rare you will meet someone walking on a footway out in the countryside. It is finished in smooth bitmac, it has priority over side roads, and the signage is excellent (in this last respect Germany is better than the Netherlands). To be called a cycleway, as this is, by law it is supposed to receive winter servicing (though I haven't put this to the test). You can travel long distances at a good speeds on such paths in Germany, not having to endure the antics of the motorists on the adjoining carriageway, who are not as well behaved as British people assume.
