A Rural Road in North Germany
The paved carriageway is too narrow for oncoming cars to pass (and way too narrow for overtaking). Passing requires drivers to run one side of the car along the unpaved section. This design discourages fast driving and rat-running; staying on the main road is easier and quicker. Consequently there will be very few motor vehicles, and cycling is pleasant and safe. This technique is also used in the Netherlands.
