This workshop will focus on trying out the ideas from today on an area centred around a local centre or transport hub. This will stimulate a discussion about the challenges presented by planning out a Low Traffic Neighbourhood, and solutions for overcoming those challenges will be shared.

The importance of active travel for improving public health, reducing air pollution and easing congestion is being increasingly recognised across the UK. Central government has introduced Local Walking and Cycling Plans that local authorities need to draw up in order to access future funding for active travel. The concept of developing a strategic cycle network on main roads as part of this is simple enough to understand, but how can the full journey, from door to door, be properly planned for?
Transport for London funded mini-Holland schemes, as well as main road cycle tracks, which have transformed local streets to reduce motor traffic levels and greatly improve conditions for local residents. Living Streets and the London Cycle Campaign have developed the concept of ‘Low Traffic Neighbourhoods’ to pass on the most important lessons from those mini-Holland schemes so that other local councils can learn what to do.
This conference day is aimed at professionals involved in all aspects of supporting active travel, from housing departments providing cycle storage and links across their properties, to business improvement districts who want to bring more money to local business centres through increased footfall, and highways planners who need to include cycling in their designs. By the end of the day you should have a better understanding of the needs of cycle users and how planning for cycling can benefit everyone regardless of whether they will cycle or not.
