In Yorkshire, the Queensbury Tunnel Society are fighting against plans by Highways England to permanently seal up the old railway tunnel, despite Bradford Council seeking funding to restore the tunnel and use it in a walking and cycling route. Although this scheme is outside of the West Midlands, we think that it is of interest to many people living here who do visit Yorkshire for holidays and would have an interest in a tourist facility like this. In addition, we think that Highways England should have a default position of supporting and promoting cycling schemes, yet this example seems to suggest otherwise. A win for the Queensbury Tunnel Society can help in directing priorities across the rest of England.
